„My name is Ksenia Malykh. Art Historian, curator, researcher, Head of Research platform at PinchukArtCentre in Kyiv, Ukraine. I have graduated from National Academy of Arts and Architecture (Kyiv), Art History faculty. Co-foundet and curator of art centre Closer (Kyiv). I was a general manager of Ukrainian pavilion in 58th Venice Biennale. I also teach students (course Self-management for Artists).
Me and my Daughter had to escape Kyiv after Russian army attacked Ukraine. Now we found great support and new friends at Kestner Gesellschaft, where I am involved into a special program of representing Ukrainian contemporary art. I think now it is crucial moment for all European cultural community to discover Ukrainian art despite hundreds years of Russian propaganda.
Also i am engaged in Ukrainian Museums crisis centre initiative: we fundraise and support local museum workers in Ukraine, who stayed in their museums to protect heritage. I believe in the victory of the Ukrainian people in the name of the freedom of the entire civilized world. Hope to come back soon.“
„My name ist Zoya Zvyinyatskivska, I am an art critic, a fashion anthropologist and an independent curator. I study the structures of cultural and social codes, using fashion and clothing as tools. I was an invited curator of the Mystetskyi Arsenal, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Odessa and a number of other Ukrainian museum institutions. My publications include a chapter on contemporary Ukrainian fashion in the encyclopedia World dress and fashion (Berg Publishers, Oxford, UK, 2010), In Progress: Fashion of Ukraine since 1991 /ArtHuss, Kyiv, 2019)
Along with my daughter and mother, I was forced to leave Kyiv, where my family has lived for more than a century, after russia has launched an invasion on my country, Ukraine. I am very grateful to Kestner Gesellschaft for the opportunity to be here and work today in this wonderful institution, where I plan to participate in the program of sharing the Ukrainian art with the German cultural public, including contemporary Ukrainian cinema and fashion. I hope that the attention paid to Ukraine and its culture – and I will try to help.
Furthermore, I believe that this is important now, and it will become even more important when our army wins, when my country will regain its freedom and continue to develop as part of the civilized world.“

Vortrag über die Geschichte der ukrainischen Mode des 20. Jahrhunderts
Mode ist ein Spiegel der Gesellschaft, vielleicht sogar der präziseste, denn Kleidung und Kleidungspraktiken lügen nie. Die Mode jeder Nation erzählt die Geschichte ihres Landes. Die ukrainische Mode des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts zeugt von den wichtigsten Ereignissen, die das Land erlebte: koloniale Erfahrungen und dekolonialer Widerstand, totalitäre und posttotalitäre Praktiken, rasante erzwungene Urbanisierung und ihre Folgen sowie der mentale Wandel in der ukrainischen Gesellschaft, die die ehemalige UdSSR zu einem unabhängigen demokratischen Staat gemacht hat.

Die ukrainische Mode-Avantgarde ist eine belebende Mischung aus sovietischer Untergrund-Kunst und dem Versuch, neue Erfahrungen zu verarbeiten. Der Ausbruch dieser Strömung begann in den 1990er Jahren, wo selbst bildende Künstlerinnen zu Modedesignerinnen wurden.
